Job summary

Roblox is seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer for the User Communities team in San Mateo, CA. You will own backend systems powering social features for millions of players and creators, scale infrastructure, and define APIs for cross-platform engagement.

You will lead architecture decisions, collaborate with product, design, and other engineering teams, and code hands-on to drive safe, high-performance systems at scale.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend software engineering experience with ownership of large-scale production systems.
• Strong distributed systems fundamentals and high-throughput system design.
• Proficiency in at least one server-side language (C#, Java, C++).
• Ability to author clear technical specs and reason about scale-driven trade-offs.
• Experience coordinating with product and multiple engineering teams across the org.

Responsibilities

• Shape the backend engineering culture across the User Communities team and beyond.
• Act as technical lead for cross-functional initiatives with product, design, frontend and backend engineers.
• Take end-to-end ownership from planning to launch, iteration, and measurable impact.
• Be hands-on in the codebase, contribute to platform development and code reviews.
• Design systems and architectures enabling Roblox creators and players to engage on and off the platform.
• Promote experimentation and new technologies with a safety-first mindset.
