Job summary

Vagaro is seeking an accomplished Staff Engineer to act as a technical leader and systems architect for our platform. You will set the architectural direction for backend systems and cloud infrastructure, driving performance, reliability, and scalability across teams.

This onsite role in Pleasanton, CA involves leading architectural strategy, designing high-throughput APIs, and mentoring engineers while staying hands-on with critical components.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8–10+ years of software engineering, backend and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience designing and operating large-scale cloud-native systems.
• Strong expertise with C# and ASP.NET (Core/MVC).
• Azure-focused architecture with knowledge of other clouds welcomed.
• Proven RESTful and event-driven API design experience.
• Deep SQL/NoSQL knowledge including data modeling and tuning.
• Expertise in asynchronous programming and concurrency.
• Authentication/authorization with OAuth/OpenID/JWT and managed identities.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration.
• CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Terraform/Bicep).
• Demonstrated technical leadership and cross-team collaboration.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Set architectural direction for Vagaro’s backend and cloud infra for scalability.
• Lead design of high-throughput RESTful and event-driven APIs.
• Drive data architecture across SQL and NoSQL systems with performance in mind.
• Establish secure, scalable authentication and authorization patterns.
• Champion asynchronous patterns, concurrency, and fault tolerance.
• Define observability, monitoring, and incident response for production.
• Partner with product and engineering leaders to map technical roadmaps.
• Provide architecture reviews, design docs, and mentorship.
• Evaluate new Azure services and lead migrations or modernization.
• Stay hands-on by prototyping and building critical components.
