Job summary

Spellbook is looking for a Backend / AI Systems Engineer to build the backend powering its AI-driven contract tools. You will deliver robust services and scalable architectures that lawyers rely on daily.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of backend production experience, strong MongoDB skills, and a track record of shipping with speed and quality. The role supports a flexible remote setup with modern cloud and AI tooling.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building backend systems in production.
• Strong fundamentals in backend engineering and distributed systems: APIs, data modeling, concurrency, queues, AI inference.
• Strong NoSQL (MongoDB) data modeling, indexing, and performance tuning.
• Able to take ambiguous problems to clear plan and shipped outcomes.
• Strong communication skills to explain technical decisions.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale backend systems that power Spellbook product experiences (Reviews, Chat, Library).
• Design low-latency, high-reliability search, inference, and orchestration layers for AI features.
• Build and operate retrieval with data isolation and performance.
• Own core AI platform concerns: rate limiting, retries, consistency, fallbacks, degradation.
• Collaborate with Product/Design to balance latency, accuracy, UX, and reliability.
• Use modern workflows, including agent-assisted coding, with rigorous review, testing, and security.
