We're seeking a hands-on Senior Azure DevOps Engineer to help lead a cloud platform transformation. You'll assess an existing Azure environment and build a more consistent, secure, and scalable platform using Infrastructure as Code.
This is a transformation and platform-engineering role, not primarily a steady-state operations position or a rebuild of every application deployment. You'll work with the Cloud Architecture and DevOps team, collaborate with stakeholders and partner teams, and help establish foundations that support incremental workload migration.
We're kicking-off a new initiative on the Azure side and we're looking for a Senior Azure DevOps engineer who would be able to lead this effort.
This is a transformation initiative rather than a steady-state operational role.
The current Azure estate spans nine subscriptions, generally aligned to environments, although some subscriptions contain multiple environments. Alongside the application estate, there are shared services and dependencies including Entra ID integration, Active Directory services, Azure Virtual Desktop, domain controllers, VMs and other supporting infrastructure. Some of these components are operated by other teams, and part of the discovery effort will be understanding dependencies and agreeing how they fit into the target platform architecture and Infrastructure-as-Code model. We currently know of approximately ten applications running on the platform, including one very large workload, although further discovery may identify more.
The estate has evolved over several years through multiple contributors and teams, with limited governance and broad access permissions. Cloud ownership has now been consolidated within my team, and our objective is to rebuild the platform in parallel using Infrastructure as Code, migrate workloads incrementally into the new platform, and ultimately retire the legacy estate.
For the initial engagement through the end of December, I would expect the contractor to:
Assess the existing estate and gather requirements from stakeholders.
Identify obvious waste, unused resources and decommissioning opportunities.
Produce a pragmatic target architecture and subscription strategy, with high-level effort and timeline estimates.
Develop reusable Terraform modules for the landing zone, networking and identity foundations.
Deploy and validate an initial set of those foundational components.
The longer-term objective is to establish a governed, code-managed platform capable of consistently provisioning new subscriptions
