Job summary

The University of Michigan seeks an experienced, strategic leader for the role of Assistant Vice President for Maintenance Services. Reporting to the Vice President for Facilities & Operations, this role provides executive leadership for Maintenance Services, overseeing planning, delivery, and long-term stewardship of campus building systems and infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, facilities management, or related field.
• Minimum of 10 years in facilities maintenance or related field.
• Minimum of 7 years in senior-level management overseeing large teams.
• Experience leading facilities or infrastructure operations in a large, complex environment (e.g., higher education).
• Strong knowledge of facility management practices and lifecycle planning.
• Experience working in a unionized environment with labor relations.
• Ability to develop and execute strategic plans, manage budgets, and lead major initiatives.
• Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
• Commitment to safety, sustainability, and service excellence.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for Maintenance Services and long-term planning.
• Oversee operation, maintenance, repair, and renewal of campus mechanical and electrical systems.
• Manage budgets and allocate resources for large portfolios.
• Monitor performance metrics and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
• Lead workforce development, training, and succession planning.
• Represent Maintenance Services in senior leadership meetings and planning discussions.
• Foster union partnerships and labor relations.
• Drive organizational change to improve reliability and service delivery.
