Overview

The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Automobile/Maintenance Mechanic for Material and Logistical Services.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Works independently as the only Automobile/Maintenance Mechanic on a particular campus reporting directly to a second level supervisor.
  • May guide and instruct other staff in the performance of a wide range of automobile maintenance and mechanical duties required for all University vehicles.
  • Responsible for daily estimation of work time and procuring appropriate materials for the group.
  • Responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of parts and keeping accurate and current inventory records.
  • May perform any duties of the group.
  • May provide guidance to craft trainees.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent plus four years of experience performing automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Successful completion of an approved training program of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade area, plus two years experience and proven competency in performing complex and varied automotive maintenance and repair work may be substituted for the above experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license with two years driving experience is necessary.
  • Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class B with Air Brake endorsement and certification in NJ Emissions Repair.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good communication skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.
  • Must be able to operate tow trucks, hoist, jacks and automotive lifts
  • Must be competent in performing complex and varied automotive repair and maintenance work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A NJMVC Inspector's license is desired.
