Job summary

You will design, implement, and optimize automation concepts, collaborating with cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers while documenting solutions thoroughly.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or related discipline with 5+ years relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (GPA ≥ 3.0)
  • Expert level knowledge of engineering design tools; CAD software; programming software
  • Experience designing, building, and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems
  • Strong communication skills and cross-functional collaboration
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading projects

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Automation Engineer - Mechanical Engineering at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for creating complex automated and robotic systems, applications and integrated equipment in a team environment that contributes to improved operations, Smart Factory enablement, and global warehouse initiatives while leading efforts in researching and developing new, cutting-edge automation concepts and solutions through system designs and programming, integrating them into a working solution.

Essential Functions
  • Utilizes the necessary tools and technical expertise to provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems
  • Demonstrates ability to complete well defined complex tasks
  • Reviews moderately complex designs and makes recommendations
  • Able to lead moderately complex projects, coordinating efforts across multiple automation engineering leads
  • Makes substantial contributions towards determination of project goals/objective feasibility
  • Makes technical and process recommendations to guide the work of others
  • Identifies opportunities to introduce automation and new technology within Operations
  • Demonstrates subject matter expertise on technical topics
  • Creates equipment and/or application documentation including operating instructions and user manuals for deployed solutions
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with other business segments, and with an understanding of how Automation objectives impact those from other disciplines
  • Serves as a mentor to less experienced Automation Engineer (Automation Engineer 1 & 2)
  • Creates equipment and/or application information including operating instruction and user manuals for deployed solutions
  • Participates in recruiting activities as assigned
  • Cleanliness zone area requirements: This position requires Garmin provided personal protective equipment including SD shoes (Static Dissipative Footwear) to be always worn when in the manufacturing environment to minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and meet specified standards
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or another related engineering discipline AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a rule)
  • Expert level knowledge of engineering design tools
    • CAD Software - able to create modelling standards and review other engineer’s feature trees
    • Programming Software - able to provide innovate solutions and review other engineers’ code
  • Creates equipment and/or application documentation including operating instructions and user manuals for deployed solutions
  • Must possess experience in designing, building, and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems
  • Possess excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with other business segments, and with an understanding of how Automation objectives impact those from other disciplines
  • Must demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in use of engineering tools
  • Must demonstrate full use of industry standards and procedures
  • Must demonstrate competence with researching fundamental problems and implementing appropriate solutions
  • Must be positive, detail/team oriented, work collaboratively/proactively/effectively with minimal supervision and the ability to prioritize/multi-task in a flexible, fast paced, and challenging environment
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with other business segments, and with an understanding of how Automation objectives impact other disciplines
  • Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion and thoroughly document work in an organized manner, creating revision-controlled documentation

  • Previous work experience working in a manufacturing or warehouse environment
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
  • Previous experience working with robotics/controls systems/mechanical or electrical design/software development
