Job summary

Atkore International is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer in Harvey, IL to support manufacturing, develop automation and SCADA systems, and drive continuous improvement. A BS in Electrical Engineering and 7–10 years of Process/Manufacturing Engineering experience are required, with preference for steel roll forming exposure.

You will lead projects, develop process controls, coordinate with E-Techs and Electricians, and ensure safety-compliant electrical infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 7–10 years of Process/Manufacturing Engineering experience.
  • Strong industrial controls skills with hands-on experience.
  • Experience with Rockwell PLC programming; Siemens a plus.
  • Experience planning power distribution, conduit and cable schedules, and layouts in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with SCADA systems (Wonderware or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Drive and support productivity improvements and best practices across the business.
  • Manage and oversee projects as Project Leader; provide documentation and schedules for improvement and new equipment projects.
  • Assist Manufacturing in improvement projects, such as Lean Manufacturing and process improvements.
  • Provide bid and costing details on electrical projects; use Gantt charts to show project progress and manage deadlines.
  • Draw schematics and documentation for skill trades groups; develop troubleshooting guidelines.
  • Implement and expand SCADA systems.
  • Participate in and/or lead Continuous Improvement activities.
  • Lead cost reduction initiatives through materials, product, and process improvements.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer based in Harvey, IL. This role supports current manufacturing and facilitates continuous improvement of manufacturing and automation methods and processes. Responsibilities include developing solutions for production problems related to materials, processes, and tooling, supporting new products and programs by developing new processes, designing automation and SCADA systems, and developing process controls. A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 7–10 years of Process/Automation/Manufacturing Engineering experience in an industrial environment are required. Experience in steel roll forming and processing is highly desired. Lean manufacturing or business system background is preferred.

What you'll do

  • Provide troubleshooting direction to E-Techs and Electricians.
  • Recommend methods, materials, and layouts for improvements based on manufacturing needs and capabilities.

What you'll bring

  • Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • BS in an Engineering discipline or a combination of college education and Electrical Engineering experience.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience in a Process/Manufacturing Engineering environment.
  • Strong industrial controls skills with hands-on experience.
  • Experience with Rockwell PLC programming (Siemens a plus).
  • Experience planning power distribution, conduit and cable schedules, and layouts in AutoCAD; experience with medium voltage power and transformers.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electronics (SCRs, diodes, rectifiers, etc.).
  • Experience with SCADA systems (Wonderware or similar).
  • Lean Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Project/Capital Project Management (scope, quoting, justification, implementation).
  • Microsoft Project and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to manage multiple diverse projects of varying complexity.
  • Tube Mill/Steel experience preferred.
  • Professional, self-motivated, and capable of working on own initiative; strong communication skills.

Within 3 months, you'll

  • Complete your Atkore immersion program.
  • Understand how your work supports Atkore's strategy.
  • Familiarize yourself with coworkers, facility, and team.

Within 6 months, you'll

  • Ensure proper operation of equipment and train others in its use.
  • Improve new and existing manufacturing processes for cost reduction, quality, or efficiency by planning workflow and applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, equipment layout and materials; solicit input from operators, suppliers, and experts.
  • Prepare detailed layouts of buildings and equipment.
  • Conduct data analysis of scrap, downtime, line rates, and material usage; prepare charts and reports to support data-driven decisions.

Within 12 months, you'll

  • Develop and maintain process guidelines and training programs for new products and systems.
  • Manage multiple projects with plans, quotes/estimates, and schedules.
  • Reduce process variation to ensure consistent product quality and compliance with standards.
  • Provide guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements.
  • Support operations by directing technical activities to solve problems across the facility.
  • Lead cost reduction initiatives through materials, product, and process improvements.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay for this position is $104,800 - $144,100. Placement depends on competencies, education, experience, skills, and business needs. Other compensation may include overtime, bonuses, stock, and incentives.
