Job summary

Roche is seeking a Principal II Automation Research Engineer to lead automation R&D for next-generation sequencing platforms. You will spearhead AI-assisted protocol development, automate complex workflows, and mentor junior engineers, collaborating with scientists and hardware/software teams in a fast-paced environment.

The role is on-site in Santa Clara, CA with some work in Pleasanton, offering relocation assistance not provided. A discretionary bonus may apply based on performance.

Qualifications

• Degree in Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• Hands-on experience characterizing and testing automation systems for sequencing/diagnostics.
• Experience using AI-assisted tools to accelerate code generation, parse schemas and automate tests.
• Experience with XML and Python to define automated instrument steps and hardware execution.
• Strong background in experimental design.
• Proficient with machine shop tools, measurement equipment and rapid prototyping.
• Leadership experience mentoring junior technical staff.

Responsibilities

• Utilize AI-assisted coding and modern software tools to accelerate protocol development, simulation, testing and automated error recovery.
• Fully automate and optimize complex workflows such as sample prep, library prep, target enrichment, quantification, pooling and sequencing.
• Test scripts and validate system performance through analytical equipment and data pipelines.
• Contribute to architecture, design and development of next‑gen automation platforms.
• Design, build and operate custom test fixtures for platforms and subsystems.
• Translate requirements into fluidic schematics and system concepts to evaluate design paths.
• Create and maintain documentation for schematics, CAD models, drawings and specs.
• Demonstrate leadership and mentor junior staff, driving technical excellence.
• Lead cross-functional strategy and influence roadmaps with Assay Development Scientists, Hardware Engineers, Software Developers, and Product Managers.
• Conduct concept, code/script and design reviews; present progress to stakeholders.
