Distinct North America in Houston is seeking a public accounting auditor with 2–3 years of experience to work across end-to-end engagements, build client relationships and mentor junior staff.

There is a strong emphasis on governmental and nonprofit audits; experience there is useful, and there’s an opportunity to gain exposure in that space. Progression toward Partner is available without sacrificing evenings during peak season.

Job description

Most weeks here sit around 40 to 45 hours and even in busy season, you’re usually looking at around 45.

Maybe one week closer to 50.

That alone will probably get the attention of anyone who’s spent the last few years being told 60 hours is “just part of public accounting”.

But the hours aren’t really the whole story. People tend to stay here.

And when people do leave, some of them come back.

That usually tells you more about a firm than a culture page ever will.

The team is close, the Partners are approachable and there’s a genuine understanding that you’ve got a life outside of audit.

School runs. Family stuff. Important things that occasionally happen at inconvenient times.

You’re not made to feel guilty for having them.

The Partner group is very involved in the day to day too, so you’ll get proper exposure rather than feeling like your work disappears upwards through three layers of management.

In the role itself, you’ll be working across end to end audit engagements, building client relationships and helping develop junior staff.

There’s a strong focus on governmental and nonprofit audit, so experience there would be useful, although someone looking to build more exposure in that space could also be a good fit.

You’ll probably have around 2 to 3 years of public accounting experience and ideally be working towards your CPA.

There’s progression all the way to Partner if that’s what you want. If it isn’t, that’s okay too.

Not everyone wants their career to become a race to the next title.
