Job summary

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) seeks an Associate Supervising Attorney for the Stay Housed L.A. program. You will lead and mentor attorneys and staff, oversee casework, and provide direct tenant representation in unlawful detainer matters as needed.

You will report to the Supervising Attorney and be a member of the NLSLA Leadership Team. This exempt role offers a hybrid schedule with on-site and remote work and travel within Los Angeles County as required.

Qualifications

• A JD from an accredited law school and active California State Bar license.
• A minimum of three (3) years of relevant legal experience; supervising/mentoring experience preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to proactively manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• Prior experience with unlawful detainer litigation and housing law preferred.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, business communication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.
• Passion for NLSLA mission and commitment to advocating for legal rights of low-income individuals.
• Empathy and compassion for assisting people from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, train, and mentor attorneys, legal fellows and support staff.
• Support, guide, and evaluate professional development of staff.
• Oversee case management, review substantive casework, accompany new advocates to court hearings, and back up advocates and volunteers at housing clinics.
• Provide direct representation to tenants in unlawful detainer matters as needed to support program operations.
• Serve as a member of the NLSLA Leadership Team.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the same level and core responsibilities.
• Hybrid work arrangement requiring on-site presence at least two days per week; travel to program offices and courthouses may be required.
