Luma Group partners with founders advancing transformative scientific and clinical innovation across the global life science ecosystem.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Luma Group is seeking a highly motivated Associate/Sr. Associate to join its life sciences investment team. The role will work closely with the Partners and contribute across the full investment lifecycle, including sourcing, diligence, execution, portfolio support, and potential board-related responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in life sciences (PhD or MD/PhD required) and 1–3 years of professional experience in life science investing, preferably with exposure to therapeutics discovery, development, and/or translation. This person should be proactive, highly organized, comfortable managing multiple workstreams, and able to communicate clearly, build relationships, and solve problems in unfamiliar situations.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic individual passionate about biotech and energized by an entrepreneurial environment. The role is based in New York City and requires in-office presence five days a week, with moderate regional and international travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Sourcing: Develop relationships with venture capital peers, academics, and industry leaders to find exciting emerging technologies and companies.
  • Deal Evaluation: Conduct comprehensive market research, competitive analysis, and light financial modeling to evaluate investment opportunities in the biotech, medical tools, and diagnostics sectors. Assess potential risks and returns, and present findings to the investment team.
  • Due Diligence: Lead due diligence efforts by analyzing scientific, clinical, regulatory, and commercial aspects of potential investments. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including scientific experts, legal counsel, and financial advisors, to assess investment viability and mitigate risks.
  • Investment Execution: Support the investment process, including deal structuring, negotiation, and documentation. Collaborate with legal and finance teams to ensure smooth transaction execution.
  • Portfolio Management: Work closely with portfolio companies to provide strategic guidance, operational support, and access to our network of industry experts. Monitor and track portfolio company performance, including financials, milestones, and key operational metrics.
  • Industry Analysis: Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and trends in the biotech, medical tools, and diagnostics sectors. Identify emerging technologies and potential investment opportunities through active networking and participation in relevant industry events.
  • Investment Reporting: Prepare investment memos, presentations, and reports for the firm's partners and investors. Present findings, progress updates, and investment recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the investment team to share insights, exchange ideas, and contribute to the overall investment strategy of the firm. Work closely with colleagues to foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • You have obtained an advanced degree in a life science discipline (PhD or MD/PhD required)
  • One to three years of experience working in life science investing ideally in a venture firm.
  • You possess resourcefulness and a proactive attitude. No task is too big or too small for you, and you approach your work with a hands‑on mentality. When faced with unfamiliar tasks, your initial response is to ask relevant questions, independently seek answers and context, and dive in with enthusiasm. While you are not afraid to attempt new things and learn from failures, you typically invest enough effort to minimize instances of failure.
  • Your colleagues would describe you as a skilled communicator who is open and articulate in conveying ideas. They would also describe you as an extremely hard AND smart worker.
  • You place great value on cultivating relationships and possess exceptional interpersonal skills. You excel in both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and you find enjoyment in applying these skills to solve intricate problems. Attention to detail is a significant strength of yours, surpassing the ordinary.
  • Lastly, your strong passion for investing and biotech is complemented by a foundational understanding of the healthcare industry and you’re willing to be in New York City.
