Job summary

York County Government in south-central Pennsylvania seeks a Senior Assistant for the adult system. This attorney carries a significant felony caseload and assists in supervising the adult Public Defenders, while handling administrative duties such as scheduling and responding to calls from MDJ offices, judges, and the public.

Qualified candidates must be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, have at least five years of felony trial experience, and be or become Rule 801 death penalty certified; a

Qualifications

• Be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar.
• Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience and have tried significant felony cases.
• Must be or be able to become Rule 801 death penalty certified.
• Good working knowledge of the criminal justice system.
• Some relevant administrative/managerial experience or ability to develop management skills.

Responsibilities

• Carries a caseload of significant felony cases.
• Assists in supervising the assistant Public Defenders in the adult unit.
• Be prepared to handle duties of the Chief Deputies in their absence, including scheduling, handling calls from MDJs, Judges and the public, and assignment of cases.
• Performs “Senior on Duty” responsibilities as scheduled.
• Must understand office policies and procedures.

The Senior Assistant for the adult system is an attorney with administrative as well as criminal trial responsibilities.The person in this position must be well-acquainted with how the Public Defender’s Office functions or have the ability to quickly master such knowledge.Administrative responsibilities include scheduling and addressing calls from MDJ office, the Judges and the public.
