Job summary

The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco is seeking a curator for the Entomology Department, to lead an internationally recognized, collections-based research program integrating morphology with genomics, imaging, and informatics. This endowed Schlinger Chair of Arachnology will grow CAS's globally significant arachnid holdings and contribute to Project BEACON.

Candidates with a Ph.D. in Entomology or related fields, and a proven record of independent research and external funding,

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Entomology, Arachnology, Systematics, Evolutionary Biology, or a related discipline.
• Experience with natural history collections and a vision for integrating collections-based research with genomics, imaging, informatics.
• Proven track record of publishing in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Experience securing external funding.
• Ability to communicate science to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Plans and executes original collections-based systematic research resulting in peer‑reviewed publications and presentations.
• Directs scientific exploration, including expeditions and collaborative research, to advance knowledge of arthropod diversity.
• Seeks extramural funding and grants to support research activities, with BEACON opportunities.
• Leads the strategic growth and mobilization of the arachnid collection.
• Contributes to digitization, sequencing, and digital integration of specimens within BEACON.

Education

Ph.D. in Entomology, Arachnology, Systematics, Evolutionary Biology, or related discipline

Postdoctoral experience preferred
