Job summary

Western Union is seeking a Senior Architect on the Gateway Engineering team to lead API design and hands-on development powering the partner ecosystem for money transfers, bill payments, money orders, and other financial services at global scale.

You will write code alongside your team, set engineering standards, and shape a culture that sustains AI-native development as a force multiplier, guiding cross-functional collaboration with product and engineering teams.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices at enterprise scale.
• 5+ years building backend applications and microservices with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience leading SOAP-to-REST migrations and modern API governance.
• Experience with event-driven integrations (Kafka/JMS/ Pub/Sub).
• Containerization/orchestration with Docker/Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

• Lead architectural design of APIs used by partners for money transfers, bill payments, and other financial activities.
• Drive migration of partner integrations from SOAP to RESTful APIs, including onboarding, versioning, and deprecation planning.
• Define API design standards (versioning, backward compatibility, contracts, error handling, DX).
• Build apps, workflows, tools, and AI-assisted coding agents within product/platform areas.
• Leverage AI to accelerate modernization, testing, observability, and developer productivity.
• Promote engineering excellence via Agile, TDD, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Estimate effort, plan implementations, and coordinate cross-functional rollouts.
