Job summary

Western Union in Austin, TX is seeking a Staff Software Engineer on the Retail Engineering team. You will design, build, and evolve high-performance, mission-critical applications using Java Spring Boot microservices and Angular micro frontend patterns, delivering secure, scalable APIs.

You will lead technical solutions, mentor engineers, conduct design reviews, and collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security, and Operations to modernize the full stack and ensure reliable, available

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field; 8+ years of experience or master’s with 6+ years.
• 6+ years in Java and Spring Boot; building APIs.
• 5+ years designing RESTful APIs with versioning and backward compatibility.
• 5+ years of TDD and automated testing.
• 2+ years AWS cloud services and cloud-native design.
• 2+ years leading design reviews and enforcing best practices.
• Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States full-time; no visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Lead API platform architecture and design decisions for scalable systems.
• Guide design reviews, code reviews, and ensure engineering best practices.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers to grow ownership and problem solving.
• Collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security, and Operations to deliver secure APIs.
• Troubleshoot production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
