Job summary

Element Fleet Management is seeking a Senior Backend Integration Engineer in San Francisco to design, build, and maintain the API gateway and integration layer for Element Pay and external systems. You will own authentication, authorization, and service-to-service communication, while shaping technical direction for the integration domain.

You will implement caching, webhook delivery, and robust testing with instrumentation.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional backend engineering experience in distributed systems or platform/infrastructure.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript (Node.js) and/or Go, with depth in at least one and ability to work in the other.
• Production experience with GraphQL and/or gRPC, including schema or service-contract design and versioning.
• Hands-on experience with API gateways, service meshes, and integration infrastructure.
• Experience with authentication/authorization technologies: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWTs, mTLS, API keys.
• Experience with asynchronous/event-driven architecture using queues, pub/sub, or event-streaming.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build the API gateway and integration layer for Element Pay services and external systems.
• Design and maintain service interfaces, including GraphQL schemas and gRPC contracts.
• Own authentication/authorization capabilities and identity propagation across services.
• Design and operate caching and outbound notification capabilities for performance and reliability.
• Develop automated unit/integration/contract tests with observability; instrument services.
