Job summary

Scripps Research in La Jolla, CA is seeking an Animal Technician III to provide daily care of research animals, observe health, perform treatments, and maintain records. This mid-senior role requires strong communication, reliability, and the ability to work weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum five years animal care experience.
• Bachelor's in life science or vet tech/AALAS cert may substitute for total experience.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to work weekend/holiday rotations if not on Fri-Mon schedule.

Responsibilities

• Daily care of research animals and maintenance of a clean environment.
• Conduct daily health observations and complete health reports.
• Perform health treatments with veterinary staff guidance.
• Transfer animals between cages and provide feed, water and bedding; report abnormalities.
• Clean, sanitize and autoclave cages and equipment; manage waste.
• Possibly breed rodents; identify pregnant animals and perform routine procedures.
• Maintain animal records and inventory; identify animals permanently.
• Euthanize animals according to procedures; receive and ship animals.
• Perform clinical techniques such as injections and tissue collection.
• Communicate with research staff on animal health, breeding, or regulatory matters.
• Maintain cagewash equipment and perform preventative maintenance.
• Assist with health monitoring and parasite testing as needed.
• Receive, inventory and prepare supplies; adhere to biosafety guidelines.
