Job summary

CenterPoint Energy is recruiting for a Property Accounting professional to manage capital asset recording, reporting, and GAAP compliance in a regulated utility environment. You will support rate cases, asset retirements, and monthly close processes with strong attention to detail.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance/Business and a CPA (or CPA in progress), plus 3+ years of relevant experience, SAP/Oracle Fixed Asset knowledge, and robust communication skills for

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business from an accredited college or university.
• CPA required; or pursuing CPA certification.
• 3+ years of relevant work experience; public accounting preferred.
• SAP and Oracle Fixed Asset knowledge.
• Strong GAAP and FERC guidance knowledge.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in project management and process improvements with strong organizational skills.
• Strong attention to detail with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare regulatory filing schedules supporting interim capital recovery mechanisms or rate cases.
• Record and report Asset Retirement Obligations including annual surveys and key assumptions.
• Perform SOX control testing and respond to audit questions related to Property Accounting.
• Apply capitalization policy and retirement unit guidelines consistently.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to document accounting conclusions for corporate results.
• Manage monthly close activities: journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting support.
• Lead ad-hoc projects with strong project management and stakeholder communication.

Job Summary

The Property Accounting team is responsible for the proper accounting, recording, and reporting of the Company’s capital assets. Property Accounting is dedicated to exceeding the expectations of our customers and internal clients, anticipating the changing needs of the Business Units, and providing solutions in an accurate and timely manner. This position supports the Company’s recovery of fixed assets and is responsible for ensuring that the capital assets are accurately recorded and reported in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal policies and procedures, and state and federal regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions

• Prepare regulatory filing schedules supporting the Company’s interim capital recovery mechanisms or rate cases. Further, perform detailed analysis and written responses to intervenor requests for information.


• Record and report on the Company’s Asset Retirement Obligations including annual surveys, analysis and developing key assumptions.


• Perform SOX control testing and respond to both internal and external audit questions relating to Property Accounting matters.


• Understand and consistently apply the Company’s capitalization policy and retirement unit guidelines.


• Work cross-functionally with business units to address questions and document accounting conclusions to maximize corporate results.


• Perform and execute key activities within the monthly accounting close cycle, including preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, reviewing monthly transaction activity, preparing fixed-asset rollfoward and ensuring timely and accurate preparation of financial reporting support.


• Manage and complete ad-hoc projects through detailed project management skills and strong communication with management and stakeholders.

Education Description

• Bachelor of Science or Business Administration degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business from an accredited college or university.


• CPA required; or seeking CPA

Experience

• 3+ years of relevant work experience required; public accounting experience preferred.


• SAP, Oracle including Fixed Asset Module knowledge


• Strong knowledge of GAAP and FERC guidance.


• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


• Experience in project management and process improvements with strong organizational skills.


• Strong attention to detail, with a proven ability to think critically and solve problems.
