Job summary

Thumbtack is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Machine Learning Infrastructure team to lead critical AI platform development that powers Thumbtack’s AI-powered experiences. You will build scalable systems across the AI/ML platform and evaluation surface, collaborating with scientists, engineers, and leadership to set multi-quarter roadmaps and deliver high-impact results.

Qualifications

10+ years of professional software engineering leadership across multiple teams.
3+ years building AI/ML infrastructure in production (model serving, feature platforms, training, orchestration, or observability).
Hands-on experience with LLM-powered systems in production (gateways/proxies, lifecycle management, RAG/agentic architectures, cost optimization).
Experience building or operating AI evaluation systems (offline eval, LLM-as-judge calibration, regression testing, A/B measurement).
Deep experience designing and operating reliable distributed systems with on-call leadership and incident ownership.
Demonstrated ability to use AI coding tools in day-to-day workflows and to critique AI outputs.

Responsibilities

Build and evolve core AI platform capabilities enabling GenAI-powered applications across Thumbtack.
Design, develop, and deploy scalable tools and infrastructure supporting AI researchers and engineers.
Work hands-on across the stack from backend services to AI model integrations.
Evaluate next-gen AI infrastructure frameworks and tools with product teams.
Drive projects to completion with measurable business impact.
Stay current with advances in AI infrastructure and evaluation methods.
