Job summary

Optum, a part of UnitedHealth Group, seeks a Lead AI/ML Engineer to lead architecture, design, and deployment of high‑performance backend systems and AI workflows across distributed clinical apps.

You will collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product stakeholders to deliver secure APIs and robust data pipelines. The role offers remote work from anywhere in the U.S., with in‑office four days per week in Minneapolis area for those in that location.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, software engineering, data engineering, or automation engineering.
• 3+ years building solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs) or retrieval‑augmented‑systems (RAG).
• 3+ years building event‑driven backend components using Apache Kafka.
• 3+ years working with relational databases using Spring Data JPA and Hibernate.
• 3+ years implementing API security protocols (OAuth 2.0, JWT).
• 2+ years developing agentic AI systems and multi‑step workflows.
• Experience deploying AI solutions in cloud environments using microservices/containers/serverless.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable backend services and AI/ML system integrations across distributed clinical applications.
• Build event‑driven backend components and integrate with relational databases using Spring Data JPA and Hibernate.
• Apply API security protocols to secure enterprise microservices and endpoints.
• Lead CI/CD automation, containerization, and cloud deployment strategies using Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud infra (AWS/Azure).
• Establish end‑to‑end monitoring and observability across distributed systems using Splunk, ELK, Prometheus, and Grafana.
• Drive engineering best practices, design reviews, and code quality standards.
