Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking an experienced AI backend engineer to design, develop, and deploy agentic AI systems powering healthcare experiences across U.S. sites and remote work.

You will build multi-agent orchestration, integrate LLMs via GraphQL, and ensure patient data protection while collaborating with clinical stakeholders. You will work with Python/TypeScript, FastAPI, Node.js, and cloud services such as AWS Bedrock, Vertex AI, and Terraform-based pipelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
• 4+ years hands-on experience with Python, TypeScript, or backend languages like Java/Node.js.
• Experience building RESTful or GraphQL APIs in production environments.
• Understanding of LLM fundamentals (prompting, context management, model integration).
• Preferred: experience with agentic AI frameworks and cloud AI services.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy production agentic AI systems powering healthcare experiences.
• Build multi-agent orchestration routing requests across specialized AI agents.
• Develop FastAPI and Node.js/TypeScript services integrating LLMs with healthcare systems via GraphQL and AppSync.
• Implement healthcare guardrails for PII, prompt safety, and compliance.
• Deploy containerized AI/ML workloads to AWS with Terraform and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with product and clinical stakeholders to optimize agentic AI workflows.
• Monitor LLM application performance, token usage, latency, and user satisfaction at scale.
• Stay current with generative AI patterns and responsible AI practices in healthcare.
