Job summary

MITRE’s Trustworthy & Secure AI (TSAI) Department seeks researchers and engineers to shape AI governance, risk management, and assurance for federal systems. You will work at the intersection of policy, technology oversight, and risk assessment to build trust in AI-enabled solutions.

Collaborate with engineering, legal, and sponsor teams to translate evolving regulations into actionable policies, develop training, and lead diverse teams on-site.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years in AI with Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years with Master’s; or PhD with 3 years’ experience
• Advanced understanding of AI/ML theory and system behavior
• Experience in AI Assurance, AI Strategy & Governance, or AI regulatory environments
• Proven ability to engage senior stakeholders across technical and operational domains
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional audiences
• Active IC or DOD Secret security clearance; eligible for Top Secret/SCI with polygraph
• On-site work requirement: minimum 3 days per week

Responsibilities

• Design and operationalize AI governance frameworks aligned with NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, and global standards
• Partner with engineering, data science, acquisition, and legal teams to integrate governance into the AI development lifecycle
• Support AI risk assessments and model explainability reviews for high-impact systems
• Track evolving AI regulations and translate them into actionable internal policies
• Develop and deliver trainings to build AI governance literacy across technical and business teams
• Collaborate with product leaders to ensure AI features meet governance and innovation goals
• Lead, mentor, and collaborate with technical staff
