Job summary

Capital One is seeking an Sr. Staff Applied Researcher to lead AI foundation model initiatives. You will work with data scientists, software engineers, ML engineers, and product managers to bring cutting-edge AI into customer experiences.

You will design, train, evaluate, and implement foundational models, mentor a team of applied scientists, and represent Capital One in the research community. The role is based in multiple U.S.

Qualifications

• PhD or MS with required years of applied research experience (PhD + 6 years or MS + 8 years).
• Hands-on experience developing AI foundation models using open-source tools and cloud platforms.
• Experience building large deep learning models (language, vision, graphs) and related training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, RLHF.
• Ability to deliver libraries or platform-level code for existing products.
• Proven track record of contributing to research with publications or notable projects.
• Ability to own and pursue a research agenda with long-running projects.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that transform customer interactions.
• Build AI foundation models from design through training, evaluation, and deployment.
• Engage in high-impact applied research and translate findings into customer-facing experiences.
• Define and evolve Capital One's long-term AI research agenda and investments.
