Job summary

Target is seeking a Lead AI Engineer for Advanced AI to design, build, deploy, and maintain AI/ML applications that drive automation and insight across enterprise workflows.

You will work with data scientists, engineers, product partners, and security teams to turn ambiguous problems into practical, scalable solutions. The role emphasizes production-grade systems, observability, and enterprise standards in a hybrid work model in Minnesota.

Qualifications

• 4-year degree in Quantitative disciplines (Science, Tech, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent industry experience required.
• MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics or related field preferred.
• 5+ years end-to-end applied machine learning and hands-on experience developing AI/ML applications.
• Experience building LLM-powered applications, agentic systems, data-intensive applications or intelligent automation capabilities.
• Strong programming proficiency with Python and experience with modern AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, etc.
• Experience with model APIs, prompt orchestration, agent development patterns, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation frameworks, observability tools, cloud ML platforms, containers or orchestration technologies.
• Strong understanding of system design, architecture, model/trade-offs, experimentation, evaluation and production deployment for AI systems.
• Experience building scalable, maintainable services, APIs, data pipelines, applications or platforms.
• Experience with version control, CI/CD, code review practices, documentation, and production support.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into clear technical approaches and collaborate with cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on technical leadership for AI engineering initiatives and shape technical direction.
• Design, build, deploy, and maintain AI/ML applications that support automation, insight, and action across core business workflows.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists, engineers, product partners, platform teams and stakeholders to turn problems into scalable solutions.
• Contribute to architecture decisions, evaluate models/frameworks/tools, and write production-quality code.
• Ensure AI applications are secure, reliable, and aligned to enterprise standards and operational readiness.
• Mentor AI engineers and raise engineering practice quality within the team.
