Job summary

Office Hours is seeking its first in-house Controller to lead the accounting function. You’ll transition from our external team, own the close, reporting, systems, and controls, and shape how the books are managed as the company scales.

This role can be remote from Boston, or hybrid from San Francisco or New York, with 2–3 days on-site. You’ll own operations, internal controls, tax compliance, and partnerships with ops and department heads to support strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience in a startup/tech setting.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA active license strongly preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and ERP systems; Excel skills.
• Comfortable working in ambiguity and collaborating cross-functionally.

Responsibilities

• Accounting Operations: own daily, monthly, and annual close processes; GL, AP, AR, payroll.
• Internal Controls: design and scale financial policies and controls.
• Financial Reporting: prepare monthly P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.
• Compliance & Tax: manage local, state, and federal filings; support audits.
• Process Scaling: evaluate and implement modern fintech stacks and automation.
• Cross-Functional Support: partner with operations and department heads for data needs.

About the role

You will lead the accounting function at Office Hours. As our first internal accounting hire, you'll take the reins from our external accounting agency and establish the function in-house. You'll have full ownership over the systems, processes, and controls you put in place. You'll decide how the books get closed, how reporting comes together, and which tools power it all. It's a chance to build accounting at Office Hours exactly the way it should be built.

This role can either be remote from Boston, or hybrid from our San Francisco or New York Offices, 2-3 times per week. Please note, fully remote candidates must be based in the Boston area.

What you’ll do

Accounting Operations: Own the daily, monthly, and annual financial close processes, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.

Internal Controls: Design, implement, and scale financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to protect company assets.

Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate, timely monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) for management review.

Compliance & Tax: Manage local, state, and federal tax filings, regulatory compliance, and support annual external audits or reviews.

Process Scaling: Evaluate, select, and implement modern financial tech stacks and automation tools (e.g., ERPs, expense management, billing software).

Cross-Functional Support: Partner with operations and department heads to support initiatives and data needs.

What you bring

Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 1–2 years in a high-growth startup or fast-paced tech environment.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

Certification: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) active license strongly preferred.

Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and other modern startup ERP systems, along with Stripe, Ramp, and strong Excel skills.

Mindset: Highly adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and eager to roll up sleeves.

Bonus Experience (Not required)

Experience in venture-backed or PE-backed companies is a plus.

Experience at marketplace-based companies is a plus.

Pay Transparency Notice

Full-time offers include base salary, equity, and benefits.

Pay range: {$140,000- $170,000}, based on seniority and relevant experience
