Job summary

Blue Shield of California is seeking an Accountant Consultant to lead day-to-day accounting, close, and reporting activities with a strong GAAP background. You will translate priorities into execution, mentor staff, and collaborate across finance functions to ensure accurate financial disclosures.

The role requires extensive accounting knowledge, independence, and the ability to manage complex issues, with preference for CPA and ERP system experience (Oracle/Workday).

Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field.
• Requires at least 8 years of experience in accounting or public accounting.
• Requires comprehensive and current understanding of U.S. GAAP, including applying judgment to complex matters.
• Ability to research and apply accounting standards with clear documentation.
• Experience preparing financial statements and auditing disclosures aligned with standards.
• CPA license or public accounting experience preferred; Oracle/Workday ERP experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate monthly financial close activities, maintain general ledger, analyze variances, monitor progress, and communicate results and risks to management.
• Review journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations; coach Senior Accountants; ensure work products are audit-ready and in line with policies.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting; draft audited disclosures; coordinate inputs and review schedules.
• Serve as subject matter expert for complex accounting matters; research guidance; articulate conclusions in memos.
• Research impact of new accounting pronouncements and assess policy implications.
• Lead or participate in development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and controls; act as project lead for implementation.
• Support internal and external audits by coordinating requests, preparing audit support, and interfacing with auditors.
• Represent the team in interactions with internal and external partners on accounting, finance, reporting and control matters; resolve issues ahead of management intervention.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and enable scalable, audit-ready execution.
