athenahealth, based in Boston, seeks a Senior Accounting Associate to join the Corporate Accounting team. You will partner with Finance, FP&A, and Tax to ensure accurate reporting, strong controls, and efficient accounting operations as part of monthly closes and external reporting.

Responsibilities include reviewing contracts, preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and footprint with SOX controls. The role offers a base salary range and a discretionary bonus as part of Total Rewards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.
• Public accounting experience or equivalent preferred.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
• Understanding of risk, controls, and SOX compliance.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong analytical and Excel skills.
• Experience with Oracle General Ledger or similar ERP.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

• Draft explanations for month-over-month balance sheet and P&L fluctuations.
• Assist in preparing month-end reporting packages for senior leadership.
• Maintain internal controls in SOX-compliant processes and identify improvements.
• Support external reporting, including footnotes and disclosures.
• Assist with audits and respond to requests from internal and external auditors.
• Leverage available AI tools to organize reconciliations and streamline reporting while ensuring accuracy.

In this role, you will partner closely with Finance, FP&A, and Tax to help ensure accurate reporting, strong controls, and efficient accounting operations. This position is based at athenahealth and reports to an Accounting Manager or Senior Manager of Accounting.About the Team:The Corporate Accounting team supports the company’s financial close, reporting, and control environment while partnering with Finance, FP&A, Tax, and audit teams. The team focuses on accurate monthly close activities, financial statement support, internal controls, and continuous improvement across accounting processes. Team members also help evaluate system changes and automation opportunities that improve efficiency and reporting quality. The work requires close coordination across the finance organization and with internal and external auditors.Essential Job Responsibilities:Support month-end close activities, including reviewing contracts and preparing journal entries and related calculations.Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and support account analysis.Draft written explanations for month-over-month fluctuations in balance sheet and P&L reviews.Assist in preparing month-end reporting packages for senior leadership.Respond to questions about financial statement and operational finance performance from finance and business partners.Maintain internal controls over financial accounting and reporting processes in compliance with SOX and help identify control improvements when needed.Assist with external reporting support, including footnotes and disclosures.Support internal and external audit requests and related documentation.Use available AI tools to help organize reconciliations, summarize variance explanations, and streamline reporting work while checking outputs carefully for accuracy and accounting compliance.Assist with systems implementation, testing, and rollout of new Oracle general ledger features and other process improvement initiatives.Additional Job Responsibilities:Help identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, efficiency, and automation.Support special projects as needed across the finance organization.Work collaboratively with FP&A, Tax, and other finance partners on cross-functional tasks.Contribute to documentation and maintenance of accounting procedures and controls.Support issue resolution and follow-up related to close, reporting, or audit activities.Adapt to changing priorities and assist with additional responsibilities as business needs evolve.Maintain a professional, team-oriented approach in a fast-paced environment.Expected Education & Experience:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.Public accounting experience or equivalent industry experience preferred.Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP required.Strong understanding of risks, controls, and SOX compliance required.Excellent communication skills with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.Strong analytical skills with the ability to explain issues clearly in writing and verbally.Strong Excel skills required.Experience supporting month-end close, financial reporting, or audit activities preferred.Experience with Oracle general ledger or similar ERP systems preferred.Demonstrated integrity and sound judgment in handling financial information.Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a fast-paced, growing environment.Ability to work collaboratively, solve problems, and maintain a positive, professional approach.Expected Compensation$77,000 - $131,000The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.
