Accounting | Reports to Controller | Full-Time | Remote
The Opportunity
The Senior Accountant is responsible for executing the Company's day-to-day accounting operations — the close process, general ledger integrity, financial statement preparation, payroll, and sales tax compliance — under the direction and review of the Controller.
This role exists to take the transactional and technical accounting workload off the Controller so the Controller can focus on financial leadership, cross-functional business partnering, and strategic initiatives with the CFO and executive team. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Controller and the rest of the Accounting team (A/R and A/P), and the Operations Team (responsible for inventory).
Key Responsibilities
- Execute the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, with results reviewed by the Controller
- Prepare financial statements, variance analysis, and supporting analytics for Controller review
- Manage and maintain the population and accuracy of the General Ledger and subledgers, including A/R, Inventory, Fixed Assets, and A/P
- Support channel and customer profitability reporting — maintain the data inputs and reconcile actuals to ensure accuracy of the monthly channel P&L
- Support inventory costing integrity — flag yield variances to the Controller and maintain BOM accuracy in the ERP in coordination with operations
- Lead sales tax reporting, including managing the sales tax reporting platform (Avalara's AvaTax) and filings; flag new-state nexus questions to the Controller
- Calculate and record monthly trade spend accruals in partnership with sales, under the ROI framework maintained by the Controller
- Partner with Operations on pricing, margin, and cost analysis — inventory cost trends vs. budget/forecast, and modeling the impact of upcoming cost increases (ingredients, packaging, freight, co-manufacturer fees) — initially executing a framework built by the Controller, with growing ownership of the analysis over time
- Support the annual audit process — prepare schedules and respond to auditor requests
- Support the annual tax return process — prepare schedules and respond to accountant requests
- Support ERP (Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central) data entry, testing, and reporting needs as directed
- Maintain and update the published price lists and ERP system as the company adds SKUs, discontinues items, or updates pricing
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills
- Strong technical accounting skills and working knowledge of GAAP
- High attention to detail and accuracy; comfortable with recurring deadlines (close calendar, payroll, tax filings)
- Able to manage multiple concurrent tasks and prioritize under deadline pressure
- Good verbal and written communication skills; able to work cross-functionally with A/P, A/R, inventory, and sales
- Able to work independently once given clear direction from the Controller
- Proficient in Excel; comfortable working within an ERP system
The Ideal Candidate
- 4–7 years of progressive general accounting experience (industry or public accounting)
- Experience in a CPG, food & beverage, or light manufacturing environment, with exposure to inventory-adjacent GL activity (COGS accounts, freight-in/freight-out accruals, co-packer or tolling fees, inventory reserves)
- BA or BS in Accounting; CPA track a plus but not required
- Experience with an ERP system (Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central a plus)
- Microsoft 365 (O365): Intermediate skills across Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Word
- Action Oriented — dives in and finds solutions when an area needs improvement; doesn't wait to be tasked
- Composure — stays level under close deadlines and month-end pressure
- Decision Quality — makes sound, well-supported decisions within own area of ownership; knows when to elevate to the Controller
- Intellectual Curiosity — notices when something doesn't look right and investigates rather than moves on; asks questions rather than makes assumptions
- Ownership & Accountability — takes full responsibility for the accuracy and timeliness of own deliverables; follows through on open items without being reminded; and surfaces problems to the Controller before they become bigger issues
- Priority Setting — manages a recurring close/payroll/tax calendar without dropping items
- Peer Relationships — works effectively with A/P, A/R, operations, and sales counterparts; builds trust without formal authority
- Business Acumen (foundational) — understands how transactions flow through to the financial statements
