Job description

Senior Accountant – More Than the Numbers

Sterling, VA | $85K – $110K + Bonus | Hybrid After Initial Training

Ready to move beyond the audit, the close, and the spreadsheets — and actually help shape how a business operates?

We're partnering with an established, mission‑driven organization in Northern Virginia that's looking for a talented Senior Accountant to join its lean, highly visible finance team.

This isn't a position where you'll be buried in journal entries all day or limited to one small piece of the accounting function.

You’ll work directly with the Controller and CFO, gain exposure to virtually every aspect of the business, and play a meaningful role in modernizing financial processes, improving reporting, and helping operational leaders make better decisions.

For someone coming out of public accounting — or a corporate accounting professional looking for more variety and responsibility — this could be an excellent next step.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

Direct access to leadership. You’ll work closely with the CFO and Controller, gaining exposure to decisions and initiatives that go well beyond traditional accounting.

A seat at the operational table. Partner with department leaders, analyze financial performance, identify inefficiencies, and help develop solutions that improve the business.

Help build something better. The organization is investing in modernizing its finance function, strengthening internal controls, improving reporting, and bringing fresh perspectives to established processes.

Build a well‑rounded skill set. Get hands‑on experience across accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, fixed assets, capital projects, and operational analysis.

Make a real impact. Join an established organization with a long‑tenured leadership team that values new ideas, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Own meaningful portions of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and general ledger activities.
  • Support financial statement preparation, management reporting, and annual audits.
  • Analyze financial results, investigate budget‑to‑actual variances, and communicate findings to leadership.
  • Work directly with department directors to identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, and operational efficiencies.
  • Assist with annual budgets, forecasting, capital planning, and long‑term financial analysis.
  • Support fixed asset accounting, capital projects, cash management, and debt and lease accounting.
  • Help strengthen internal controls, streamline processes, and improve financial visibility throughout the organization.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Ideally 2–5 years of accounting experience.
  • Public accounting experience, particularly audit, is highly desirable.
  • Experience with a Top 20 public accounting firm would be a plus.
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred, but not required.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and Excel.
  • An analytical mindset and the ability to communicate effectively with non‑accounting professionals.
  • Someone who is curious, proactive, and excited to understand how a business actually works.

Coming from corporate accounting instead of public? We’d still love to hear from you.

Industry experience in senior living, healthcare, nonprofit, or a multi‑entity environment is helpful, but not necessary.

  • Base Salary: $85,000–$110,000, depending on experience
  • Bonus: Discretionary annual bonus, historically targeted around $2,500–$5,000
  • Hybrid Schedule: Five days onsite for the first 60–90 days, transitioning to four days onsite and one remote day per week
  • Retirement: 403(b) with a 4% employer match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and additional employee benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities
The Bigger Picture:

The organization has been established for approximately 30 years and is entering an exciting period of operational and financial improvement.

Leadership is looking for someone who doesn’t just want to report the numbers, but wants to understand them, question them, and use them to make the business better.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your accounting career and want a position where your contributions are visible, valued, and impactful, we’d welcome a conversation.
