The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the accounting operations of the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia (ULGP), ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and internal controls. The Senior Accountant manages key day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, account reconciliations, and support for month-end and year-end close processes, audits, grants management, budgeting, and financial compliance activities. This role must be equipped to use technology to strengthen existing processes, integrate, and automate financial workflows.
The Senior Accountant serves as a key contributor to the finance team by providing accurate and timely financial information, strengthening internal controls, and supporting sound fiscal stewardship of organizational resources.

General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and post journal entries to support month-end and year-end close.
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and subsidiary ledgers on a timely and accurate basis.
- Research and resolve discrepancies identified during account reconciliations.
- Lead in the month-end and year-end close process and related reporting to leadership.
Budgeting & Financial Analysis
- Assist in the preparation and monitoring of departmental and organizational budgets.
- Prepare variance analysis and supporting schedules for management review.
- Support the development of financial forecasts and projections.
- Track organizational financial performance and flag notable trends.
- Assist program leaders with budget-related questions and reporting.
Grant & Contract Compliance
- Track grant expenditures and monitor compliance with funding requirements.
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly and annual invoices in collaboration with program departments
- Assist in preparing financial reports for grantors and funding agencies.
- Support grant budgeting and reporting processes.
- Ensure proper allocation of expenses among programs and funding sources.
- Provide financial support to program teams during grant applications and renewals.
Audit & Compliance
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the annual financial audit.
- Respond to requests from external auditors in a timely manner.
- Support compliance with federal, state, local, and nonprofit reporting requirements.
- Help maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies.
Payroll & Benefits Administrative Support
- Assist with payroll accounting and related reconciliations.
- Ensure accurate recording of payroll expenses and liabilities.
- Collaborate with Human Resources regarding payroll changes and benefits reporting.
System & Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal workflows.
- Support the implementation of accounting procedures that improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Use financial systems, including Sage, to strengthen reporting and financial management processes.
- Maintain proper documentation and retention of financial records.
Team Support & Collaboration
- Partner with the Controller and Finance team on day-to-day accounting operations.
- Provide guidance and support to accounting staff as needed.
- Ability to work collaboratively with program teams and external partners
- Support Board Finance Committee reporting requirements as needed.
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.
- Manage all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and fixed assets.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain accounting records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Reconcile bank accounts and balance sheet accounts timely and accurately.
- Monitor cash flow and provide recommendations to leadership.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA or progress toward CPA certification a plus.
- Additional certification (e.g., CMA) a plus.
Experience
- Minimum 4-7 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a nonprofit or grant-funded environment
- Experience with multi-program, multi-funding and multi-entity accounting strongly preferred.
- Experience preparing account reconciliations and supporting month-end close processes.
- Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with New Market Tax Credits, Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) and Local Share Account (LSA) grants a plus
- Experience with federal, state, foundation, or government grant accounting preferred. Experience supporting financial audits and nonprofit tax reporting a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Knowledge of accounting and compliance requirements.
- Proficient with financial systems; experience with Sage is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial reporting skills.
