Job description

Senior Accountant

Department: Accounting & Finance

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Oak Brook, IL

Compensation: $70,000 - $83,000 / year

Description

The Senior Accountant, Supply Chain Accounting serves as key support to Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, and Procurement — providing financial oversight of inventory valuation, purchase price variances, freight costs, inventory reserves, and excess and obsolete inventory management. This role is responsible for executing critical month-end close activities, completing balance sheet reconciliations, and driving continuous improvement across U.S. and Canadian operations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively across functions, and brings a continuous improvement mindset to everything they touch.

How You Will Help
Month-End Close & Journal Entries
  • Execute assigned month-end close responsibilities in accordance with established corporate close timelines.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries with complete and accurate supporting documentation.
  • Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations for U.S. and Canadian entities, investigating and resolving open items timely.
  • Partner with Procurement and Supply Chain teams to validate vendor rebate agreements, monitor rebate performance, and ensure accurate accounting and reporting of rebate accruals and earnings.
  • Assist with annual external audits and borrowing base requests, including preparing schedules and responding to inquiries.
Inventory and Freight Accounting
  • Analyze in-transit inventory balances — domestic, imported, and manufactured — and investigate and resolve uncleared or stale items.
  • Monitor cost variances and investigate uncleared balances by location and product code.
  • Support standard cost maintenance and updates in the ERP, including participation in the annual cost roll process.
  • Perform monthly review of inventory reserves, including excess, slow-moving, and obsolete inventory; identify trends, communicate findings and recommendations to leadership.
  • Analyze and monitor Purchase Material Reserve (PMR) and Purchase Price Variance (PPV) activity; investigate significant fluctuations, identify root causes, and communicate findings.
  • Investigate and correct accounting rule errors and mispostings in the ERP; partner with IT and operations to implement systemic fixes.
  • Manage weekly freight pay runs and monthly freight accruals; ensure accuracy of freight cost allocations across divisions and locations.
  • Partner with AP and Customer Service teams to monitor unbilled shipments, resolve billing delays, and minimize exposure related to unbilled customer shipments
  • Analyze and resolve accounting variances impacting freight, distribution, and logistics operations.
Process Improvement & Business Partnering
  • Partner with Operations, FP&A, Corporate Accounting and Logistics to analyze financial results and resolve discrepancies.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce close cycle timing, resolve systemic accounting issues, and improve reporting accuracy.
  • Assist with special projects, ad hoc analyses, and other accounting and finance responsibilities as assigned.
What You Will Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing, distribution, or supply chain environment.
  • Hands-on experience with inventory accounting, standard costing, cost absorption, or purchase price variance analysis.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including Pivot Tables, advanced formulas, and financial modeling.
  • Experience with ERP systems (M3, D365, Oracle HFM/FCC or similar) and reporting/analytics tools (Power BI or similar)
  • Experience with AI tools (Claude, Copilot or similar)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills; ability to translate complex financial data into clear business insights.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
