Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Accountant. This position supports the financial operations of the institution by independently performing complex accounting and reconciliation functions in accordance with institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The role prepares and maintains advanced Excel-based cost distribution tools, analyzes financial transactions for accuracy and compliance, and completes monthly cost distributions and uploads to automated accounting system. The position researches and resolves discrepancies, prepares correcting entries, internal transfers, and budget adjustments, and ensures the integrity of financial data through detailed review and reconciliation. Responsibilities include reconciling bank accounts and payment systems, preparing required tax filings, managing Due Diligence reporting, and responding to departmental inquiries related to expenses and revenues. The role collaborates closely with accounting, finance, budget and purchasing offices; delivering accurate and timely financial services to support the University's mission and campus community.

This position is designated as a Quasi-Full-Time (30 hours/week) classified position.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications
  • Strong computer proficiency, with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Thorough knowledge of general accounting principles and practices, exceptional attention to detail, and well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex financial transactions.
  • Ability toperform detailed research, reconcile accounts, and identify, investigate, and resolve financial discrepancies, including those related to bank, payment, and credit card reconciliations.
  • Working knowledge of business operations.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to effectively prioritize workload and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate clearly and professionallywith other campus offices.
  • Strong internal and external customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
Required Experience:
  • Experience in general accounting.
  • Demonstrated experience using automated accounting systems and maintaining accurate general ledgers.
