Job summary

The Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) seeks a Senior Accountant in Bethesda, MD to join a collaborative finance team. You will support month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, and payroll processes while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

This full-time exempt role offers a competitive base salary in the $71k–$75k range, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities to partner with the Controller and CFO on budgeting and system implementations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with 2–4 years in staff accountant or 1 year in senior accountant.
• CPA candidate preferred.
• Experience with Concur, ADP, and Sage Intacct.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and reconcile monthly balance sheet accounts, including Fixed Assets, Investments, etc.; support monthly close processes.
• Manage the accounts payable cycle: invoices, expense reports, payments, and vendor issues.
• Process payroll changes and oversee bi-weekly payroll in coordination with HR, including audits and retirement/HSA reporting.
• Monitor compliance with federal/state regulations including W-2/1099 reporting and escheatment requirements.
• Support annual audit with schedules, reconciliations, and documentation; participate in internal control initiatives.
• Collaborate with Controller and CFO on budgeting and financial system conversions.

Senior Accountant

A Typical Week May Look Like This…

• Prepare and reconcile monthly balance sheet accounts including Fixed Assets, Investments, Accrued Liabilities, Payroll, recording journal entries, and supporting the monthly close processes.
• Manage the accounts payable cycle, including invoice and expense report review and approvals, inputting expense vouchers into Concur reporting, payment processing (checks, ACH, wires), and vendor issue resolution.
• Process payroll changes and oversee bi-weekly payroll in coordination with HR, including audits, ADP submissions, and retirement/HSA contribution reporting.
• Monitors the daily compliance with federal and state regulations including W-2 and 1099 reporting, state property tax filings, and escheatment requirements.
• Support the annual audit by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation; participate in internal control and process improvement initiatives.
• Maintain documentation of financial workflows and contribute to the development of new procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency of the financial reporting function.
• Directly work with and assist the Controller and CFO in tasks such as budgeting, financial reporting, and financial system conversions for the Association.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with 2-4 years of experience in a staff accountant role or 1 year in a senior accountant role. CPA candidate preferred.

• Experience with systems such as Concur, ADP, and Sage Intacct.
