We are seeking a highly experienced and driven Senior Stop Loss Underwriter to join our dynamic underwriting team. In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal stop loss business, collaborating closely with multiple carrier partners and reinsurance providers, and driving growth while ensuring responsible management of capital. The ideal candidate will have a robust understanding of the medical stop loss market and a proven ability to evaluate and manage complex risks, all while fostering profitable relationships with key stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Risk Assessment & Pricing
    • Lead the underwriting process for new and renewal stop loss business, including evaluating risk, determining appropriate pricing strategies, and establishing coverage limits tailored to the needs of both clients and carrier partners.
    • Collaborate with actuarial teams to assess loss trends, large claims, point solutions and other relevant data to develop competitive and sustainable pricing models.
    • Continuously refine underwriting strategies to ensure alignment with carrier appetite, market conditions, and reinsurance structures.
  • Relationship Management
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure smooth flow of business.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert to sales, clinical and underwriting teams, providing expertise in risk selection, underwriting guidelines and market trends.
    • Partner with carrier and reinsurance partners to secure favorable terms and capacity for medical stop loss coverage.
    • Leverage deep market knowledge to drive revenue growth while ensuring underwriting decisions maintain the carrier's risk tolerance and capital efficiency.
  • Claims & Coverage Review
    • Collaborate with the claims department to monitor the performance of existing policies and resolve any issues that arise related to claims, coverage, or risk management.
    • Ownership of renewal accounts post-sale to ensure proper cost containment strategies are in place and effectively managing a profitable portfolio.
  • Portfolio Management
    • Manage a diversified portfolio of stop loss business, ensuring growth targets are met while balancing risk exposure and capital stewardship.
    • Monitor and assess complex accounts to ensure continued profitability and adherence to agreed-upon risk-sharing terms with carrier and reinsurance partners.
    • Perform periodic reviews of stop loss portfolio to identify trends, emerging risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Business Development & Growth:
    • Work closely with sales & marketing teams to develop new business opportunities, leveraging relationships with brokers and agents to expand the existing portfolio.
    • Identify new channels of growth and product development to continue diversifying our offering to the external market.
  • Mentorship & Team Leadership:
    • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants, sharing expertise and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
    • Lead training sessions to ensure the team stays updated on underwriting best practices, carrier requirements, and industry developments.

QUALIFACTIONS

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in stop loss underwriting, with a strong understanding of medical stop loss, reinsurance structures, and pricing models.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, mathematics, economics, risk management or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data to make informed underwriting decisions.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with a focus on fostering collaboration with external partners and internal stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of stop loss underwriting guidelines, reinsurance treaties (quota share, excess of loss), and the broader insurance landscape.
  • Ability to handle multiple accounts efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with technical tools such as Microsoft Excel, SQL, Power BI, or Tableau.

WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT

  • Proven success in managing relationships with carriers, reinsurers, and brokers to drive profitable business.
  • Professional certifications such as ARe, CEBS, CSFS, or other relevant designations are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a complex book of business while balancing risk, profitability, capital efficiency, and revenue growth.

COMPENSATION:

$120,000 - $150,0000 for this role will depend on several factors including relevant experience, credentials, skills, geographical location, and knowledge pertaining to this role and industry.
