Self-Pay Collections Specialist I #Full Time

The 61st Street Service Corporation provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.

This position is primarily remote, candidates must reside in the Tri-State area.

Note: There may be occasional requirements to visit the office for training, meetings, and other business needs.

Job Summary:

The Self-Pay Collections Specialist I is responsible for follow-up work on Self Pay account balances. Responsibilities include handling inbound calls generated by an auto-dialer to secure payment, establish payment arrangements, and/or obtain updated patient information. Representatives must exhibit professional and courteous behavior at all times during communications.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Handle a high volume of calls promptly and efficiently.
  • Attempt to collect full payment from patients or guarantors.
  • Process payments collected over the phone for each date of service.
  • Establish payment arrangements and document terms in the billing system.
  • Handle customer inquiries, disputes, and complaints, escalating to supervisors or higher management as needed.
  • Obtain and update insurance, demographic, and guarantor information; bill third-party payers as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 6 months of experience in physician billing or a third-party payer environment.
  • Strong customer service and patient-focused orientation, with the ability to communicate effectively, adapt, and respond to complex situations, including diffusing tense situations professionally.
  • Understanding of contracts, insurance benefits, exclusions, billing requirements, claim forms, HMOs, PPOs, Medicare, Medicaid, and compliance regulations.
  • Experience with patient financial and practice management systems like Epic is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Previous call center or claims experience is preferred.
  • Experience in an academic healthcare setting is preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $21.63 - $26.44

Note: Salary offers will fall within these ranges based on experience, skills, training, and education.
