Job summary

Occidental in Houston, TX is seeking a Machine Learning Expert to join the Subsurface Innovation Imaging Team. You will develop ML and physics-informed methods for seismic imaging and inversion.

The role requires a Ph.D./MS in a quantitative field, 5+ years of FWI experience, Python and PyTorch proficiency, and the ability to work with large seismic datasets on GPU/cloud platforms. Strong communication with geophysicists and asset teams is essential.

Qualifications

• MS/PhD in a quantitative field (Geophysics, Applied Math, Physics, CS or related).
• 5+ years of hands-on FWI experience on real seismic data.
• Proven experience applying machine learning to geophysical problems.
• Knowledge of seismic imaging, wave propagation, inverse problems, and optimization.
• Proficiency in Python and PyTorch (training, validation, performance).
• Experience with large scientific datasets and computational workflows.
• Strong judgment, ability to compare fairly and communicate uncertainty.

Responsibilities

• Develop ML and hybrid physics-ML methods for seismic imaging, inversion, and velocity model building (ML-assisted RTM, LSRTM, FWI).
• Apply deep learning, generative models, neural operators, and physics-informed approaches to denoising, interpolation, image enhancement, model prediction, uncertainty estimation, and interpretation.
• Build workflows that handle large multidimensional seismic datasets on GPU and cloud infrastructure.
• Validate new methods against physics-based approaches and justify their value or limitations.
• Move prototypes into production imaging workflows with documentation and reproducibility.
• Communicate results clearly to geophysicists, data scientists, and asset teams.
