Job summary

Oxy in Houston, TX is seeking a Machine Learning Expert for the Subsurface Innovation Imaging Team. You will develop ML and physics-informed approaches for seismic imaging, inversion, and model building, with production-grade workflows in GPU/cloud environments.

The role requires 5+ years in FWI, strong ML/GPUs, and deep knowledge of seismic imaging methods. Collaboration with geophysicists and data scientists is essential for project success.

Qualifications

• MS/PhD in Geophysics or related quantitative field.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on FWI experience with real seismic data.
• Demonstrated experience applying machine learning to geophysical or physics-based problems.
• Working knowledge of seismic imaging and the numerical methods behind it: wave propagation, inverse problems, optimization.
• Proficiency in Python and PyTorch, including training, validation, and performance evaluation.
• Experience with large scientific datasets and computational workflows.
• Sound scientific judgment: fair comparisons, honest uncertainty communication.

Responsibilities

• Develop ML and hybrid physics-ML methods for seismic imaging, inversion, and velocity model building.
• Apply deep learning, generative models, neural operators, and physics-informed approaches to denoising, interpolation, image enhancement, and uncertainty estimation.
• Build workflows that handle large multidimensional seismic datasets on GPU and cloud infrastructure.
• Validate new methods against physics-based approaches and assess value added or not.
• Move prototypes into production imaging workflows with reproducibility and documentation.
• Communicate results clearly to geophysicists, data scientists, and asset teams.
