Amazon Data Services, Inc. in Austin, TX is seeking a SYSDEV Engineer II to join the Hardware Development Engineering team.
You will bridge hardware, firmware, and software across the security ecosystem, driving system-level integration for embedded devices used in AWS data centers. You will design and validate firmware, define network connectivity, and contribute to testing and qualification of secure hardware platforms, collaborating with firmware, networking, and server teams to ensure
The Security Products and Solutions (SPS) team owns the full lifecycle of physical security hardware products deployed across AWS's global data center fleet. Our portfolio spans nine product categories including boundary control, access control, intrusion detection, media destruction, and radio communications.
We are seeking a SYSDEV Engineer II to complement our existing Hardware Development Engineering team. While our Hardware Engineers focus on the design, qualification, and deployment of security hardware, this role bridges those products into the broader security ecosystem - ensuring seamless integration with firmware, network infrastructure, and server platforms.
The SYSDEV Engineer II will be responsible for understanding how security products operate within the larger technology stack, developing and validating firmware and embedded software, defining network connectivity and server-side integration patterns, and driving system-level testing across the full security infrastructure. This role requires a strong systems thinker who can move fluidly between hardware, firmware, and software domains.
Architect and maintain the integration of physical security hardware products (access control panels, intrusion sensors, cameras, media destruction devices) within the broader security ecosystem encompassing firmware, network, and server layers.
Define system-level interfaces and data flows between security devices, management servers, and cloud-based monitoring platforms.
Collaborate with security operations teams to ensure products function reliably within end-to-end security workflows across global AWS data centers.
Develop system architecture documentation that describes how security products interface with data center infrastructure (power, network, rack, and server).
Define technical requirements for new product integrations, ensuring compatibility with existing security infrastructure and network topology.
Evaluate and recommend system design improvements to enhance product reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for security devices, including boot loaders, communications stacks, and device management agents.
Coordinate firmware release processes including version control, qualification testing, staged rollouts, and rollback procedures across the global fleet.
Investigate and resolve firmware-related field issues through log analysis, remote diagnostics, and root cause analysis.
Design and implement network connectivity solutions for security hardware, including protocol selection (TCP/IP, MQTT, HTTPS, RS-485), VLAN configuration, and firewall rule definitions.
Ensure compliance with AWS data center network security policies and standards for all connected security products.
Design and execute system-level test plans covering firmware validation, network integration, server communication, and end-to-end security workflows.
Develop automated test frameworks and tooling to support continuous integration and regression testing of security product ecosystems.
Support qualification of new security products by validating system-level integration prior to production deployment.
Partner with Hardware Development Engineers to ensure new product designs account for firmware, network, and server integration requirements from the earliest design stages.
Work closely with security operations, infrastructure engineering, networking, and software teams to drive seamless deployments.
Represent the SPS team in cross-organizational design reviews, architecture discussions, and vendor engagements.
Author and maintain technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, integration guides, firmware release notes, and operational runbooks.
Establish and enforce engineering standards for firmware development, network integration, and system testing within the SPS team.
Contribute to the team's knowledge base by documenting lessons learned, best practices, and troubleshooting procedures.
