Announcement Number 2027-017 Posting Date Tuesday, August 18, 2026 Status Full-Time,Non-Exempt Location Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina 29601 Schedule Works a bi-weekly rotating schedule of day shift, night shift, and/or evening shift with occasional weekend shifts. The shift times are:

  • Day Shift: 7:45a-4:15p
  • Night Shift: 12:45p-9:15p
  • Evening Shift: 9:45a-6:15p
  • Weekend Shift: 7:45a-6:15p on Saturday and 12:45p-6:15p on Sunday

Salary $22.11 per hour. Position works 37.5 hours per week. Annual pay: approximately $43,110 Available August 2026 Application Deadline Open until filled

Function

Reporting to the Adult Services Director, this position:

  • Performs a variety of security duties, some of a specialized nature, for the purpose of promoting safety and security for Library System premises, property, customers and coworkers.
  • Embodies the Library System’s code of service by creating an atmosphere where customers and coworkers feel invited, informed, impressed, and inspired.
  • Greets customers and coworkers with a welcoming smile, and enthusiastically provides knowledgeable and meaningful assistance and support regarding security, as well as general library information.
  • Performs work under general supervision, in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate (GED).
  • At least one of the following:
    • One or more years of experience working in security, emergency preparedness, safety, law enforcement, or related field.
    • Five or more years of experience routinely handling safety and/or security-related incidents in a customer service position.
Physical Requirements

Additional Requirements
  • Use of personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement.
  • Possess and maintain automobile insurance on personal vehicle.
  • Possess and maintain a valid S.C. driver’s license.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Under the County’s Substance Abuse Policy, the Library has designated this position as a safety sensitive position which requires pre-employment drug testing on applicants and random drug and alcohol testing on employees.

  • Conducts foot patrols of Library System buildings and exterior premises and property of assigned location, remaining highly visible and moving quickly from one area to another as appropriate. (E)
  • Observes activities and behavior on Library System grounds and buildings and responds appropriately when necessary. (E)
  • Provides assistance and support regarding safety and security matters to customers and staff as needed and/or as requested. (E)
  • Effectively communicates and enforces the Library Code of Conduct and other policies, procedures, and rules to customers and staff members. (E)
  • Assists customers and staff in emergency situations. (E)
  • Effectively communicates appropriate information related to security, as well as general Library System information in a tactful and professional manner. (E)
  • Provides a professional authoritative presence by maintaining a neat, clean appearance and dressing in a manner that commands respect. (E)
  • Deals with disorderly customers in an effective manner; identifies and employs the most appropriate corrective measures that may include explaining alternatives to the inappropriate behavior, issuing verbal or written warnings, notifying parents or guardians, removing the customer from Library System property and calling law enforcement. (E)
  • Monitors annunciator panels for visual and/or audible notifications of trouble and/or failures of emergency generator, burglar and/or fire alarm equipment and notifies appropriate personnel. (E)
  • Responds to notification from card access system of unauthorized entry into stairwells, restricted access and/or staff only areas and takes appropriate action. (E)
  • Monitors, reviews and retrieves stored data and images from CCTV system. (E)
  • Maintains and updates appropriate security reports, records and activity logs. (E)
  • Provides security for Library System branch locations and special events as needed.
  • Conducts safety and security inspections of all Library System locations as assigned and notifies Facilities Maintenance Manager of any areas of facilities and grounds that need attention. (E)
  • Removes litter, debris and other discarded items fromLibrary Systembuildings, parking lots and grounds as part of patrol duties. (E)
  • Reviews and provides feedback for security related policies and procedures.
  • Interacts with representatives of community agencies (e.g., local law enforcement, homeless shelters) as needed to support job duties and maintain positive working relationships with those agencies.
  • Maintains first aid and spill cleaning supplies.
  • Obtains and maintains American Red Cross Instructor certification in First Aid and CPR and Preventing Disease Transmission, as assigned.
  • Trains Library System staff in emergency procedures, use of fire extinguishers and first aid.
  • Responsible for the setup and breakdown of meeting rooms at Main Library. (E)
  • Substitutes for couriers in their absence.
  • Follows safe work methods to prevent injury. (E)
  • Works a schedule that meets the needs of the unit. (E)
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance and remains compliant with the Library System’s Attendance Guidelines. (E)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills/Abilities & Characteristics

(Testing of computer skills will be part of the interview process for this position.)

  • Knowledge of security methods/procedures and safety principles/ practices.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations related to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and life safety.
  • Ability to use a personal computer for basic word processing, database searches and email.
  • Ability to carry out assignments independently.
  • Ability to exhibit tact, courtesy and good judgment.
  • Ability to learn and work with technical equipment involved in the job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Library System staff and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of security-related issues, reports and records.
