Job summary

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2) in Seattle is seeking a Security Engineer to lead our security program and strengthen the security of our cloud, ML pipelines, and software infrastructure.

You will establish security policies, perform audits, prioritize investments, and work across research and engineering to reduce risk. The role is on-site at our Seattle office with a focus on practical, risk-based security improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 8–10 years of software/infrastructure engineering experience.
• 5+ years focused on security engineering, application security, or security architecture, ideally owning a security program.
• Hands-on experience with security and compliance audits and implementing or assessing controls (e.g., NIST 800-171).
• Track record of building a security program largely from the ground up.
• Strong ability to advise non-security technical leaders and translate risk into actionable recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain documentation for Ai2's security approach, policies, standards, and SSPs.
• Maintain and prioritize a backlog of security investments.
• Conduct in-depth security assessments across cloud infrastructure, ML pipelines, and application code.
• Investigate security incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and drive remediation to closure.
• Build systems and tooling to improve security compliance, observability, and governance (audit logging, access controls, vulnerability management).
• Partner with research and engineering teams to address security concerns.
• Define and evolve security standards and secure-development practices.
• Evaluate and secure SaaS platforms and data handling, including vendor risk assessments.
