Job summary

Bon Secours Mercy Health in Cincinnati, OH is seeking a Protective Services Officer to provide internal and external safety across facilities, respond to calls, and assist with investigations as needed.

You will patrol grounds, escort patients and staff, monitor CCTV, enforce policies, and document incidents with daily activity logs. This role requires quick decision making and clear communication in a healthcare setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational/technical degree preferred.
  • 1–2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience preferred.
  • Licensing: Valid driver’s license; BLS certification required within 6 months; TASER training per SLED guidelines within 60 days.

Responsibilities

  • Protect patients, visitors, and employees by escorting, patrolling, and mitigating hazards.
  • Deter criminal activity through routine patrols of hospital property and parking areas.
  • Enforce hospital policies (parking, visitation, drug enforcement, tobacco/smoking).
  • Monitor activity via CCTV and respond to escalating situations.
  • Intervene in confrontations and document all duties with daily activity logs and incident reports.

Job Summary

The Protective Services Officer provides internal and external safety/security functions to support the general safety of BSMH facilities, including participation in investigations and detentions when warranted. Protective Services officers are assigned to an area and respond to radio and/or telephone calls for routine and/or emergency assistance.

Essential Functions
  • Protects patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property to include all parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies (e.g., parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco free/smoking policy).
  • Monitors hospital activity on closed circuit television to be alerted to any escalating situations that may require protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor and/or staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents all duties performed to include completion of daily activity logs and incident reports.

Education

Required Licensing & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire)
  • RSFH Specific – Must meet South Carolina Law Enforcement Division licensure requirements (armed – Taser) within 6 months of hire and complete TASER Training certification within 60 days, in accordance with SLED guidelines and maintained thereafter.
Experience
  • 1-2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)
Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Word
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body‑worn cameras, soft restraints), in alignment with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Maintain strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software, with the ability to accurately document incidents and coordinate effectively with clinical teams and law enforcement.
Soft/Interpersonal Skills
  • Effective Communication, Active Listening, Empathy, Conflict Resolution
Training
  • Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Training (Required within 6 months of hire)
