Job description

General Definition:
  • This is security work at the full performance level. A position in this class makes rounds of assigned County facility, responds to calls for assistance and safeguards individuals and property. Work includes directing and assisting members of the public visiting the facility. A position in this class is differentiated from other classes by the provision of security service. A position in this class reports directly to a technical or administrative supervisor.
Typical Examples of Work:
  • Makes rounds, by foot or vehicle, of assigned area including parking lots and grounds; checks doors, windows, gates and other points of entry; checks security clocks, stations and records; observes conditions and situations contributing to any possible loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism or other causes; activates alarm systems; locks doors; opens locked doors for authorized personnel; refuses entry to unauthorized individuals; keeps records of individuals entering and existing facility after normal public hours.
  • Responds to calls for assistance and/or alarms; uses fire extinguishers and other emergency equipment; enforces established regulations; contacts law‑enforcement agencies for assistance; observes apparently aberrant behavior; conducts disruptive individuals from the premises; directs visitors and those having business to facility offices and other areas.
  • Keeps logs and makes reports of ongoing activities; notifies higher‑level personnel of any unusual conditions or occurrences, including need for emergency repairs; reviews logs and reports of previous shifts, noting situations requiring follow‑up.
  • Performs other work as assigned.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of facility security work.
  • Ability to learn specific layout and location of facility offices, areas, exits and related elements.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergency and/or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with individuals occupying and members of the public visiting the assigned facility.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records of activities and submit reports of same.
  • Ability to perform foot patrol of large facilities for periods of a few hours at a time.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to nursing facility patients, families and visitors, if required by work assignment.
Additional Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Must have Act 120 or Act 2 Certification.
Schedule:
  • To Be Determined by Appointing Authority.
Experience:
  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade. One to two years security, law‑enforcement or related work. Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited above.
Education:
  • G.E.D. or High School Diploma.
