Job summary

Hudbay Minerals U.S. Business Unit seeks a Security Officer I to join the Helvetia, AZ site. The role focuses on access control, visitor management, and incident response within a copper-focused mining operation.

You will support the Emergency Response Team, monitor security at the site, and help ensure safe, compliant operations while coordinating with local responders and management.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and logs all employees, contractors, and visitors in and out, ensuring compliance with site security protocols.
  • Verifies MSHA 5000‑23 comprehensive training certificates for all personnel entering the site.
  • Directs visitors and vendors to their destination.
  • With guidance, issues access credentials and assists with badge accountability and inventory.
  • Administers and tracks site-specific hazard recognition training for all contractors and visitors.
  • Responds to accidents, incidents, suspicious activity, and emergencies as needed.
  • Acts as member of the mine’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), supporting both internal and external first responders during emergencies or crises.
  • Collaborates with external agencies in the prevention of crime.
  • Works with fire response units for fire suppression, and with medical units in the event of emergency situations.
  • Relays site weather warnings to all personnel as needed.
  • Performs frequent foot and vehicle patrols of the property, and observes and reports on conditions of equipment, damage, or any suspicious activity.
  • Writes incident reports and maintains appropriate logs.
  • Once trained, conducts surveillance of the site in person and by utilizing technological equipment.
  • Assists with the distribution, maintenance, and proper use of communication equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Role Accountabilities
Access Control & Visitor Management

Minimum Qualifications And Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0‑1 years experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to assist with emergency situations calmly and efficiently.

Preferred Qualification
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or military service.
  • Previous experience at a mining operation.
  • First Aid: CPR or relevant medical certifications/training.
  • MSHA training.
  • Experience with radio communications, surveillance systems, access control software, or other security-related technology.
  • Background in electrical work, low‑voltage wiring, or general equipment maintenance.
  • Experience with basic carpentry, welding, fencing, or general repair work.

Work Environment

The work environment will necessitate work near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions such as hot and/or dry conditions. Work will be conducted in locations where noise, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration may exist. Employee must be able to prove that he/she has a current and valid driver’s license.
