Job summary

Seattle Convention Center is seeking a Security Officer responsible for safeguarding occupants, assets and facilities while enforcing SCC safety and security programs. The role requires responding to emergencies, de-escalating incidents, patrolling premises, operating CCTV and access control systems, and coordinating with the Security Management team.

Responsibilities

• Maintain understanding of duties, department procedures, SCC policies, and report violations to supervisor.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Respond to emergencies calmly with sound judgment and without bias.
• De-escalate high-tension situations without physical force according to procedures.
• Assist visitors and staff with information and directions in a patient, efficient manner.
• Know the facility interior and exterior, life-safety equipment, and egress routes.
• Patrol assigned areas to ensure no hazards and that security measures are in place; patrol by foot, bicycle, or vehicle.
• Operate security software (CCTV, guard tours, access control, incident reporting) and understand fire alarm systems.
• Provide personal escort to guests/employees for safety and sign-in/out at the Security Control Room.
• Coordinate with security or life-safety contractors; support operations during emergencies.
• Communicate using two-way radio and proper SCC codes; use multi-line phone systems.
• Maintain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification; provide assistance as needed.
• Perform miscellaneous duties as directed by Security Management.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of SCC occupants, assets, and facilities by upholding standards of the SCC safety & security program. Security Officers work both independently and as part of a team to provide protection, surveillance, and general assistance to the Convention Center’s guests, staff, and surrounding community. The ability to lead others in an emergency, respond to a variety of situations in a professional manner, and perform duties without direct supervision is paramount.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain a thorough understanding of all duties, department procedures, and SCC policies and independently uphold them; immediately report any violations or wrongdoings to the appropriate supervisor
• Maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive or legally protected information or data
• Respond to multiple emergency and non-emergency, and sometimes high-pressure, situations and function in an efficient, calm manner, using sound judgment free of discrimination or personal bias, in all situations
• Effectively de-escalate high tension situations, without the use of physical force, while adhering to all department procedures and SCC policies
• Respond to questions and requests from visitors, other SCC departments and client subcontractors and provide appropriate information/directions in a patient, efficient and courteous manner
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of the entirety of the facility - interior and exterior - including, but not limited to, all stairwells and egresses, life-safety equipment, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, room numbers, etc.; and the most efficient and safe routes to take when responding to any emergency or non-emergency situation
• Patrol all assigned interior and exterior areas of the facility to inspect that they are free hazards or facility issues, that all security measures are in place and functioning, and address any other observed security issues. Patrol is conducted on foot, by bicycle, or at times using a motorized vehicle dependent on the assignment
• Execute daily event work orders and schedules to turn on and off escalators or elevators, unlocking and securing event spaces, provide keys or access cards, and re-key event spaces for client needs
• Operate security software such as CCTV camera systems, guard tours, access control, lost and found, and incident reporting. Maintain a thorough understanding of the fire alarm system and its equipment to respond to any alarm signals, identify the location of the alarm, and function the panel to bypass or reset the fire alarm system
• Provide personal escort to guests or employees anywhere on the premises as requested for the purpose of safety with respect to confidentiality
• Staff the Security Control Room as assigned; assist incoming visitors in signing in and out of the facility and ensure proper identification/badging of all non‑SCC personnel. During emergency situations, coordinate all activities as directed by the established emergency procedures
• Act as liaison between SCC and related security or life safety system contractors to support security operations
• During emergency situations, respond in accordance with the established emergency procedures, inclusive of quickly moving to any area of the facility and providing the needed assistance
• Effectively communicate using a two‑way radio and maintain current knowledge of appropriate use of the radio, as well as all SCC radio codes and effectively use a multi‑line telephone system
• Maintain current First Aid, CPR and AED certification (as provided by the SCC) and provide assistance as needed
• Perform miscellaneous related duties as directed by Security Management

The employee is occasionally exposed to biohazards such as exposed needles, bodily fluids, or refuse, as well as, moving mechanical parts; high places; fumes or normal airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; confined spaces; wetness; slippery surfaces; and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One (1) year of security experience required, preferably in the hospitality, retail industry, or with a governmental organization
• Candidates may supplement experience with documented education in the physical security field from accredited organizations such as certificate programs, an active WA state security guard license (armed or unarmed), or an advance degree (Associate Degree or higher)
• Ability to pass Verbal & Physical De‑Escalation certification (provided by SCC)
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two (2) years or more of security experience
• Experience with responding and operating automated fire/safety systems
• Experience with access control systems and proximity credentials
• Experience with operating CCTV systems
• Experience with verbal de-escalation involving individuals suffering from mental health disorders and drug addiction
