Job summary

The Field Museum is seeking a Protection Services Security Officer on 2nd shift to safeguard visitors, staff, and artifacts at 1400 S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr, Chicago. This role reports to the Assistant Manager and requires strong situational awareness and teamwork.

Work 3:30pm–12:00am, 40 hours/week, with benefits including health coverage, a 403(b) plan, paid time off, and staff discounts, plus complimentary museum admission.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Three or more years of security experience required.
• Ability to work under pressure and take charge in rapidly escalating situations.
• Strong Computer Skills such as Gmail, Google Calendar, etc.
• Flexibility with schedule; may assist with staffing on other shifts.

Responsibilities

• Take the lead in an emergency situation.
• Work well with other team members to achieve departmental goals.
• Provide general information to the public in a courteous manner.
• Observe and control visitor access at the Museum.
• Protect the collections; deter vandalism or violence.
• Assist with crowd control at Museum entry points and patrol premises.
• Report activities to maintain order and protect property, visitors, and staff.
• Maintain post at entrances to screen personnel and manage sign-in/sign-out logs and badgeings.
• Lock and unlock specified Museum entrances, areas, and exits as needed.
• Respond to requests for assistance and evaluate appropriate actions.
• Respond to emergencies such as fires or injuries.
• Complete incident reports.
• Administer First Aid CPR/AED/Stop The Bleed in emergencies.
• Assist with shipping/receiving, Access Control, Mail Center and freight elevator as backup.
• Operate the Security Console: inspect cameras, alarms, comms, and recording devices.
• Assist with on-the-job trainings of new security officers.
• Follow instructions and policies as in the Policy Manual.
• Support supervisors as needed.

Under the direct supervision of the security shift supervisor, performs a variety of protective, service and courtesy duties, including complex and special duties requiring above average initiative, judgment, and specialized knowledge or skill. Provides a safe and secure environment for visitors, staff, and the Museum collections.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Take the lead in an emergency situation
2. Must have the ability to work well with other Team Members in order to achieve departmental goals
3. Provide general information to the public in a courteous manner
4. Observes, assists and controls when necessary visitor access in the Museum
5. Protect the collections, serves as a deterrent to acts of vandalism or violence
6. Assists with crowd control at Museum entry points, patrols premises, as directed to protect FM property
7. Reports activities in order to maintain order and protect Museum property, visitors, and staff
8. Maintains a post at assigned entrances to screen incoming personnel, maintain sign-in and sign-out logs, as well as badging process for persons entering the Museum
9. At specific times, locks and unlocks specified Museum entrances, areas and exits
10. Responds to requests for assistance and evaluates appropriate courses of action, including investigation and explanation of policies and procedures.
11. Respond to emergencies, such as fires, evacuation implementations or employee and/or visitor injuries
12. Complete incident reports
13. Administer First Aid CPR/AED/Stop The Bleed in the event of any major medical emergencies
14. Serves as backup to the shipping and receiving staff, Access Control, Mail Center and the freight elevator
15. Performs duties in the Security Console, which includes daily inspection of security cameras, alarms, communication system and recording devices for the Museum
16. Assist with the on-the-job trainings of new security officers
17. Follows all instructions and adheres to all policies and procedures as presented in the Policy Manual
18. Services supervisors as needed.
