Job Summary
Provides a safe and secure environment for hospital patients, visitors, and employees by enforcing security regulations and continuously monitoring for and reporting potential safety hazards. Investigates complaints or potential criminal conduct, assists in restraining patients when necessary, and provides protective services. When authorized, may arrest criminal suspects under the authority of a State Special Police license.
Essential Functions
- Patrol assigned areas, paying particular attention to zones with previous security problems.
- Identify unsafe conditions and improperly secured areas/property to prevent theft, injuries, or damages to hospital properties, patients, visitors, and employees.
- Maintain strict confidentiality standards at all times.
- Investigate thefts, shortages, and other complaints involving potential criminal misconduct; question involved individuals, notify appropriate law‑enforcement agencies, detain suspicious individuals as appropriate, and, when authorized, make arrests. Participate in subsequent court proceedings as required.
- Prepare and submit written reports in a complete and accurate manner; log all incidents and keep the supervisor informed at all times.
- Maintain accountability for valuables/property and forms of evidence coming into the incumbent’s custody, ensure safekeeping, and keep documentation.
- Act as a dispatcher using state‑of‑the‑art integrated security systems; radio dispatch personnel to respond to occurrences and phone calls for assistance; provide and maintain documentation.
- Assist in workplace and domestic victim incidents, respond to medical emergencies, perform patient restraints when authorized, protect dignitaries, and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Voluntarily participate in various departmental committees, task forces, and teams.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice (preferred)
Licenses and Credentials
- Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver’s License (preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (preferred)
- Basic Officer Certification (CHSO) – International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (preferred)
- Supervisory Certification (CHSS) – International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (preferred)
- MGH Security RMV Check/Registry of Motor Vehicles Driving Report (preferred)
Experience
- 3–5 years of experience in hospital security, police, emergency medical services, or customer service (preferred)
