Job summary

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is seeking a Security Officer to protect visitors, tenants and employees across the Yard. You will perform access control, conduct motor patrols of the Yard sites, monitor piers and docks, and assist in directing emergency response vehicles.

You must maintain logs and daily reports, communicate clearly by radio and in writing, and uphold courtesy and professionalism in all interactions.

Qualifications

  • 8‑hour & 16‑hour Security Training Certificates required
  • Valid security license required
  • Valid driver’s license required

Responsibilities

  • Be courteous and professional in all assignments and interactions.
  • Stay alert and report crimes, accidents, hazards, or unusual activity.
  • Maintain activity logs and complete daily reports.
  • Conduct mounted and dismounted patrols; enforce traffic rules and monitor areas.
  • Assist with relaying equipment to officers and monitor vessels/vehicles.
  • Supervise radio/communications checks and report incidents.
  • Communicate incidents observable via video surveillance.
  • Record all reports in the security database.
  • Track vessels and report arrivals/departures.
  • Monitor video surveillance and access control systems.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job description

The Yard is a 300-acre waterfront campus that is home to 550+ businesses employing more than 11,000 people. Security Officers ensure the safety and security of visitors, tenants, and employees while providing excellent customer service at various posts throughout the Navy Yard.

Areas of Responsibility
Access Control
  • Be governed by, and demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and respect during all assignments and interactions
  • Stay alert to conditions requiring attention and immediately report any crime, accident, hazard, or unusual activity
  • Maintain activity log and complete daily reports
Motor Patrol
  • Conduct mounted and dismounted patrols of BNYDC areas
  • Enforce traffic rules, monitor illegal dumping
  • Assist the Sergeant with relaying equipment and supplies to officers on posts
  • Monitor vessels at piers and dry docks
  • Monitor vehicles parked at building loading docks
  • Assist in directing or escorting emergency response vehicles
Command Center
  • Supervise radio/communications checks with all posts following each shift change
  • Communicate incidents or environmental information and activity that is observable via video surveillance
  • Record all reports received by guard posts, radio, or telephone in the security database
  • Monitor emergency services and marine base stations, inform appropriate gate or post of approaching emergency vehicles/vessels
  • Track vessels by piers and docks; report their name, ship type, general cargo type, arrival and departure times
  • Report degraded or interrupted video surveillance, access control, or communications
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent customer service during all interactions with employees, tenants, visitors, etc.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, over radio, via written reports.
  • Strong punctuality and time management skills; must be able to report to your shift/assigned post on time.
  • Proficiency with computers, radios, and video surveillance systems
Qualifications

Preferred
  • Introduction to Radio Communications (LET540), Texas A&M Engineering Extension (or equivalent) within three months
  • Certificate of Fitness F‑01 Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment, City of New York within three months
  • Certificate of Fitness F‑04 for Temporary Indoor/Outdoor Place of Assembly Safety Personnel within three months
  • CPR / Basic First Aid /AED Training, American Red Cross or American Heart Association within six months
  • Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) (LET543), Texas A&M Engineering Extension or APCO International (or equivalent) within one year
