Job summary

NMAAM in Nashville, TN is seeking a Part-Time Security Officer to monitor pedestrian and staff movement, safeguard artifacts, and support exhibition logistics.

Part Time Nashville, TN, US

Security Officer

The Security Officer will monitor pedestrians’ foot traffic, museum staff, support personnel and materials entering or leaving the museum. This position will assist in tracking facilities issues with the HVAC, Fire Detection and Suppression Systems and provide security support to Exhibition installments and removals. The Security Officer will recommend to the Director of Security any issues, events, circumstances, or occurrences that could negatively impact staff, visitors or collections’ safety and security.

The Security Officer will assist the Security Team with overseeing all aspects of security, including but not limited to, maintaining training and providing a safe environment for the museum, employees and visitors. This position will ensure the safeguard of artifacts and assets with equipment, identify and address threats & risks to the museum and guests, such as:

  • Natural Events (e.g., floods, earthquakes, and tornados), other environmental conditions (e.g., extreme temperatures, high humidity, heavy rain, and lightning).
  • Intentional Acts of Destruction (e.g., theft, vandalism, and arson).
  • Unintentionally Destructive Acts (e.g., spills and leaks, mechanical and electrical issues, trip hazardous, and plumbing issues).

NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor all security equipment and systems.
  • MonitorallFireDetection,FireSuppression,andHVACSystems.
  • Monitorandrecordartifacts,materials/supplies,andpeopleenteringorleavingthebuilding.
  • Monitorandreportongeneralcollectionsandexhibitions.
  • Make regular patrols of the facility's interior and exterior, consistent with the maintenance of the highest levels of facility security and safety.
  • Works in harmony with other security & facility personnel and maintains proper communication with other museum personnel.
  • Monitorallpotentiallydangerous,unsafe,orhazardoussituationsandcircumstancesandaddress and report them accordingly to a supervisor.
  • Recommend, implement, and maintain appropriate practices to provide security for all art andartifacts used in museum exhibits, programs, and special events.
  • Willreadandbecomefamiliarwithallthemuseum'sPoliciesandProceduresManual,the Emergency Action Plan manual, and all HVAC and Fire Detection/Fire Suppression Manuals.
  • Helpothermuseumdepartments,asnecessary.
  • Monitorandcontrolaccesstothefacility.
  • AssistwithmaintainingthehealthoftheCCTV/IntrusionSysteminfrastructure,including monitoring the Fire Suppression System.
  • ManageandcontrolthemonthlyinventoryofFirstAid/AEDsecurityequipment.
  • Maintainlostandfound.
  • Maintainkeyandaccesscontrollogs.
  • Assistwithequipmentinventory.
  • Provideeffectiveliaison,support,andassistancewithothercolleagueswithintheorganization.
  • CoverSecurityDepartmentschedulesduringvacationandillness.
  • Responsible for all aspects of security, safety, and emergency procedures when the Director of Safety and Security is off premises.
  • Otherdutiesasassigned.
General:
  • This position falls under the Security Department working no more than 20 hours per week to include weekends, holidays, evenings, and special events as required.
Education and Experience:
  • High school or equivalent. 1 year customer service experience.
  • Armed Security License (preferred); licensing requirements are subject to state and/or local laws and regulations and may be required prior to employment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Thinkcriticallyaboutsecuritymeasures,includingidentifyingpotentiallycompromisedareas.
  • Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to deal with all levels of personnel and the public in a professional and effective manner.
  • Display exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills to operate innovative wireless technology.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations at the client site, calmly and efficiently.
  • Must be able to handle working with high volume public.
  • Ability to provide high quality security services to protect people and property, while maintaining proficiency in the use of all assigned protective equipment, restraint devices and weapons.
  • Participates in industry specific security/safety training programs.
All Staff Duties:
  • Serves as leader to assure strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.
  • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
  • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:

Work in various environments such as cold weather, rain/snow, or heat. Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 pounds. Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift. Stand or walk on various surfaces for long periods of time
