Job summary

New Mexico Highlands University is seeking a dedicated Security Officer to protect campus facilities and people. Responsibilities

• Secure buildings when not in use and open as needed.

• Assist on-scene sworn personnel and report emergencies to Chief of Police or designee.
• Document incidents and conditions in daily log; monitor lighting and safety hazards.
• Provide campus security during events and safety escorts for students and visitors.
• Maintain attendance and perform other duties as assigned.

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for protecting the rights of those persons with whom they have contact asprovided in the Constitution of the United States, the Statues of the State of New Mexico, the Ordinances of the City ofLas Vegas and the regulations of New Mexico Highlands University.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:• Ensures that buildings on campus are secured when no longer needed at night and are opened as appropriateduring the days.• Performs building security checks for hazardous conditions, open doors, water leaks, fire detection and criminalactivity utilizing the security management system.• On duty Security Officers shall not possess or use any type of firearm.• Security Officers have the authority to detain but not arrest and must contact certified officers immediately forassistance.• Assists on-scene sworn personnel.• Responds to assignments or special tasks in a manner to provide for efficient accomplishment of duties under thedirection and supervision of the Chief of Police, or his designated representative.• Notifies dispatcher of any criminal and/or any unusual or suspicious circumstances or behavior.• Performs interior and exterior door checks of all buildings within his/her assigned route during shift.• Documents in the daily log all open doors; unlocked doors; damaged doors; broken windows; locks that aredysfunctional and burnt-out lights, etc.• Documents in the daily log all hazardous conditions and violations such as fires/alarms; gas leaks; and roadhazards, etc.• Responds to emergency calls.• Provides traffic control as necessary.• Provide security during campus functions.• Reports all hazardous conditions and violations to the morning shift who will report them to Facilities Services.• Checks campus lighting weekly and complete appropriate paperwork.• Provides safety escorts for NMHU students, faculty, staff and visitors.• Maintains regular attendance.• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.WORK ENVIRONMENT:• Work is normally performed in an exterior setting.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:• EDUCATION: High school Diploma or GED.• EXPERIENCE: Previous law enforcement or security experience and/or training.o PREFERENCE:• Security certification.EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:• Must possess and maintain a valid NM Driver’s License.• Must be 18 years of age.• Must be free of the any felony or domestic violence conviction.• Must be willing to work overtime as required.• The shift and/or hours of duty will be prescribed by the Chief of Police or the designated representative accordingto departmental needs.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:• Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion in tactful contact with students, staff, and the general public.• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.• Ability to question and interview skillfully.• Ability to maintain good physical condition.• Skill in the use of required safety and Police/Security equipment.• Knowledge in the use of the computer.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:• Sitting – Occasionally• Standing – Frequently• Walking – Frequently• Bending – Occasionally• Squatting – Occasionally• Climbing – Frequently• Kneeling – Occasionally• Lifting/Carrying up to 50 pounds – Occasionally
